The MetroWest Regional Transit Authority has received preliminary approval for a shuttle service along Route 9 that would run to and from the Green Line during morning and evening commuting hours, according to its administrator Ed Carr.
It still must get funding from the Federal Transit Administration and the state's Executive Office of Transportation.
The MWRTA received notice of the Metropolitan Planning Organization's subcommittee approval Thursday, Carr said, although details about a budget and schedules will be worked out later. It also received MPO approval for $400,000 to buy buses for the service, and has applied to the state for an additional $100,000 in matching funds.
Carr found when he researched the idea this spring that many MetroWest employers were very interested in the service because they have workers that live in Boston or its suburbs with little public transportation available at the right times.
Unless funding is forthcoming Carr can't project a timeline for the service to start, although if all goes well, he hopes to be ready by the first of the year.
