Q. How are you settling in at your new office?
A. I'm settling in nicely. Over the last few years, I've been splitting my time between EMC's offices in Singapore and Boston. In my new role, I'll be spending a lot more time in Massachusetts.

Q. What's the biggest surprise you've had in starting the job?
A. While I was aware of this already, I'm now gaining an even deeper appreciation for how absolutely critical information technology is to business agility and scalability. I'm looking forward to driving this for EMC.

Q. What challenges do you see in your new position?
A. Let's face it, the economy has the world in a headlock. We'll get out of it. Fortunately for EMC, we're positioned financially and technologically to grow market share while many others are forced to focus on mere survival. IT spending is being scrutinized more closely, but it is not being eliminated. It's critical that CIOs spend in areas that give the business agility, efficiency and scalability, as well as position it for increasing its market advantage.

Q. How different is this job from your previous position?
A. It's very different, but a positive step in my career. My prior job was working with global partners and customers around the world. As CIO, I will continue doing that, but clearly will be spending more time working with our leading team of IT professionals and our business unit leaders to embrace the technology needed to manage, govern and leverage our critical information assets to support and evolve the business.

Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?
A. It's actually in line with my aspirations. I've always been interested in technology. My career has evolved over the years to incorporate my interest in business, technology and strategy.

Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your new location?
A. The pizzeria conveniently down the hall from my office. I'll have to set a goal for myself to get out more.

Q. What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?
A. 10 years is like a lifetime these days. Whatever my title might be, you'll probably find me at the intersection of business, technology and strategy.
