Couch Potatoes And The State Economy

The video game industry puts more than $2 billion into state coffers, according to the results of a Mass Technology Leadership Council survey.

The council said the "digital gaming industry" employs more than 1,200 technology professionals in the state and is expected to increase that number by 20 percent this year.

According to the survey, almost half of the digital gaming companies in the state have been in business for more than five years and Massachusetts colleges and universities currently have 15 programs related to the digital gaming industry. One of the higher-profile programs is the interactive media and game development program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Nearly 80 percent of the video game companies in the state are privately funded or funded by angel investment. About 46 percent focus on the PC as a video game platform while 13 percent each focus on the Xbox 360 and the PS3 systems.

Mass TLC surveyed more than 30 gaming companies during the first half of the year.
