UMass Medical Recognized For Sustainability Efforts

The state Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs awarded the UMass Medical School in Worcester a "Leading By Example" award this week for efforts to improve energy efficiency across its campuses.

Some of the initiatives include:

  • Reducing the amount of No. 6 fuel oil the campus uses by converting to more environmentally-friendly natural gas.
  • Opening a new "green" data center that uses 40 percent less energy than the old system.
  • Implementing an electronic pay-stub system for 6,600 employees.
  • Donating kitchen food waste to a local pig farmer.
  • Giving unused office furniture to local nonprofit organizations.

Gov. Deval Patrick established the leading by example program in 2007. Other awardees this year included University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Fire Services, and the towns of Greenfield, Mashpee, Medford and Northampton.
