Echo Therapeutics Wins Federal Research Grant

Franklin-based medical device firm Echo Therapeutics Inc. has been awarded a grant worth nearly $500,000 to cover R&D costs going back to last year.

The grant, a Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, gives the company $244,479 for R&D expenditures incurred in 2009. The company expects to receive a second, identical grant after its submits its 2010 tax returns.

Positive clinical results for Echo's flagship "SkinPrep" system won the grant for the company. The SkinPrep system delivers drugs through the skin without the need for needles.
