Nantucket Salaries Hit Hardest During The Recession

By all accounts 2009 was a tough year for the working man. And now, thanks to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, we have the data to prove it.

Compensation levels declined in two-thirds of the counties in the United States during 2009, contracting overall by 3.2 percent.

New England accounted for 6 percent of the nation's total compensation in 2009. Salaries declined in 59 of the region's 67 counties, including Worcester and Middlesex counties.

But the local area was not the hardest hit. The largest compensation contraction occurred in Nantucket County, where total compensation shrank by more than 10 percent.
