10 Things I Know About... Voiceover

10. SAY WHAT?

The way your company sounds is as important as the way it looks. By using a voiceover actor (VOA) you put your best sound forward. The world of voiceover is littered with pros and hobbyists. It’s up to you to find the one voice that can represent your company.

9. PLEASE HOLD

VOAs aren’t just for your telephone system or commercials. Marketing videos, product tutorials, animations, PowerPoint presentations, website introductions, even podcasts can all benefit from the right sound.

8. FINDING A VOICE

There are online websites that allow you to audition talent. These third-party sites may be difficult to navigate so you may want to contact the voices you like directly. Those with experience will have their own websites and make it easy to start a dialog.

7. GO PRO?

If your office manager has a great voice then perhaps he can make your phone system sound lovely. Or you may find, after auditioning VOAs, that someone just starting out has the right tone and feel.

6. GO PRO!

A professional VOA will have the experience you need. They will know what you need, sometimes even when you don’t, because of their experience.

5. PREPARE

Be open about your budget from the start. Have your script ready. Have a deadline. Know what file format you’ll need in the end , whether it is a .wav, .mp3, .aif or .vox.

4. PAYMENT

Third-party sites often have payment plans set up which include a fee for the site. If you are working directly with the VOA for the first time, they may ask for all or part of the payment upfront.

3. CONTRACT

Third-party sites will have most of the bases covered, but if you’re working directly with a VOA, then ask for a contract that sets up what they will provide, what they need from you, deadlines and the final cost.

2. PRESSURE

Don’t panic. It’s like hiring any other contractor. You want the best for your money and a real professional can bring your project to life.

1. OTHER SERVICES

Do you need just the dry read or do you need full production and music? The VOA may know great script writers, videographers or animators as well.
