Westfield's Loss Is Worcester's Gain

Worcester State University's board of trustees voted Monday to recommend Barry M. Maloney as the 11th president of the school.

Maloney, who is currently the vice president of student affairs at Westfield State University, is expected to start work in Worcester on July 1, pending approval of the appointment by the state Board of Higher Education.

The finalists for the job also included Mark P. Bilotta, CEO of the Colleges of Worcester Consortium, as well as administrators from Southern Connecticut State University and Eastern Kentucky University.

WSU Board Chairman John Brissette said that Maloney's experience as an interim president at Westfield from 2006 to 2007 as well as his work in student affairs and institutional advancement made him the top candidate.

The board began the search to replace current WSU President Janelle C. Ashley in the fall, after she announced her plans to retire this year. Ashley is the first female president of Worcester State, which was founded in 1874.
