Mass. Adds More Jobs

The state economy grew by 6,600 jobs in January while the unemployment rate held steady at 6.9 percent, according to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

The largest gain in employment came from the professional scientific and business services industry, which added 3,500 jobs. The trade, transportation and utilities sector grew by 1,800, while leisure and hospitality added 1,700. Education and health services, manufacturing and government all lost jobs.

The 6.9 percent unemployment rate was the same as the December rate, which had been revised from an original estimate of 6.8 percent.

The job numbers are seasonally adjusted.
