MGM Ends Brimfield Casino Effort

Less than three months after announcing its intention to purse a casino development north of the Massachusetts Turnpike in Brimfield, MGM Resorts International said it has scrapped those efforts because of concerns over infrastructure.

"The unique nature of MGM's plans for an all-inclusive world-class resort on the Brimfield site, and our growing understanding of the needed scope for its infrastructure, simply [does] not allow us to pursue the comprehensive MGM resort originally envisioned here," Bill Hornbuckle, chief marketing officer, said in a statement this afternoon.

Though the highway runs close to the site, there is no off ramp in the immediate vicinity. The closest are in Sturbridge and Palmer. MGM said in January that it was willing to build one.

MGM, which had signed an option on 150 acres of land, said it remains committed to finding another site in the Western Massachusetts zone designated in the casino bill passed late last year.

MGM will continue working out of its Brimfield office in pursuit of other sites.
