Central Mass. Hospitals Make the Grade In National Survey

The majority of hospitals in Central Massachusetts received a top grade for safety in a survey released yesterday by The Leapfrog Group.

Hospitals receiving an "A" grade include Harrington Hospital in Southbridge, Heywood Hospital in Gardner, Health Alliance in Fitchburg, both the Natick and Framingham campuses of MetroWest Medical Center, Milford Regional Medical Center, and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester.

Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer received a "B."

Several area institutions received a "C" grade, including UMass Memorial Medical Center and Marlborough Hospital.

The survey results are self-reported. The Leapfrog group is a consortium of Fortune 500 companies and other large health care purchasers founded by the Business Roundtable to reward hospitals for advances in patient safety and quality, according to its website.

To calculate the grades, Leapfrog compiles information on structural measures, safe practice measures, surgical care improvement and hospital-acquired conditions and infections.
