UMass Memorial Cardiac Program Earns Highest Ranking

UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester has received the highest quality ranking from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for two cardiac surgery procedures.

It is the sixth year in a row that the hospital has been awarded three stars for its coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) and the first for its aortic valve replacement surgery (AVR). These are the only two surgeries that are rated by STS, which began rankings in 2006. The programs were evaluated based on patient outcomes, number of deaths and complications.

Only 3.2 percent of the 968 cardiac surgery programs nationwide received the three-star designation for AVR, which used data from results from 2009-2011, while 14 percent of hospitals achieved the top ranking for CABG.
