UMass Medical Wins Prison Contract

The University of Massachusetts Medical School has won a federal contract to manage medical services for nearly 5,000 inmates at a correctional facility in North Carolina.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons awarded UMass Medical a $24.7-million, one-year contract, which represents the Worcester school's largest federal correctional health contract, according to a UMass statement. The contract includes options for four additional years that could increase the overall value to more than $136 million.

The school's Health and Criminal Justice Program will manage the contract at the prison, located in Butner, N.C., about 10 miles northeast of Durham. Under the contract, UMass will coordinate both inpatient and outpatient physician and hospital services.
