WPI, UMass Medical To Collaborate On Army Project
Armed with a $1.9 million research and development grant, a team from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) will begin a project aimed at early detection of blood loss for wounded U.S. soldiers this fall.
The U.S. Army awarded WPI the grant to pay for the three-year project, which will be led by Ki Chon, head of WPI's Biomedical Engineering Department, and Yitzhak Mendelson, associate professor of biomedical engineering, according to a statement.
Under the project, the WPI team will develop sensors for soldiers to wear in battle to detect physiological signals of blood loss, as well as algorithms to process those signals and smartphone technology to be used as diagnostic tools by Army medics, the statement said.
The sensors and smartphone technology will then be evaluated by the UMMS team through an observational study of trauma patients.
