Worcester State Receives Largest Ever Gift
Worcester State University (WSU) announced it had received its largest philanthropic gift ever of $3 million from an alumnus of the class of 1955.
Lt. Col. James Sheehan, a retired Marine, donated the money to establish a new honors college, fund study abroad programs, and provide merit-based scholarships, according to the school. The gift was announced in conjunction with Barry M. Maloney's inauguration today as WSU's 11th president.
"I'm both inspired and humbled by this generous recognition of WSU's achievements and Lt. Col. Sheehan's belief in our vision for the future," Maloney said in a statement.
Sheehan graduated from Worcester State Teachers College – as WSU had been known – before entering the Marine Corps, according to WSU. He then enjoyed a successful career as venture capitalist.
This is the second gift Sheehan has made to WSU. In 2006, he donated $500,000 to establish annual scholarships and academic excellence awards, according to WSU.
"These young students should be able to make the most of their time at WSU. If we can help them do that, I think we should," Sheehan said in a statement.
