UMMS Receives $1.6M National Grid Incentive

The energy efficient features of new Albert Sherman Center (ASC) have earned its owner, the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS), a $1.6-million incentive payment from National Grid, according to UMMS.

The ASC, a 500,000 square-foot research and education facility, is nearing the end of construction at the school's Worcester campus. The efficient design and technology used to reduce electricity consumption as well as emissions clinched the incentive payment.

According to a statement by UMMS, the ASC will consume 4.1 million fewer kilowatt hours of electricity and emit 4.5 million fewer pounds of carbon dioxide than a comparable building of standard design.

UMass Medical School Chancellor Michael F. Collins said energy incentives enable UMMS to "invest in design and advanced technologies that ease the environmental impact of (the) campus and save money in the long term."

UMMS received $90 billion for construction of the ASC under the $1 billion Life Sciences Bill signed by Gov. Deval Patrick in 2008, which was designed to encourage life sciences development in Massachusetts. The project costs $400 million, UMMS said.
