View This Year's Central Mass. 100

Meet the 2013 Central Mass. 100, the region's most complete picture of the companies and leaders that drive its economy.

Making this list is simple and straightforward: You need to have a large concentration of employees within the cities and towns of Central Massachusetts. The region, as we define it, includes all of Worcester County and extends east to Natick and Wayland, north to the New Hampshire border, south to the Connecticut border, and west to Hardwick. The companies are ranked based on number of local employees, although we include data on each firm — including statewide employee counts and revenue — if that information is available from the companies themselves or other sources.

The list is compiled by the Worcester Business Journal editorial team, led by our research director, Roger Magnus, and research assistant Heide Martin. Intern Tyler Scionti also helped gather information for this Focus section.

The 100 companies that qualified for this year's list come from a variety of industries. Here are three notable highlights:

• Health care continues to have a dominant presence in the region's employment base. UMass Memorial Health Care again ranked first overall on our list, followed by MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham (No. 10) and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester (No. 11), both run by Vanguard Health Systems. In fact, Saint Vincent added more than 500 jobs over the last year.

• Retail also has a strong presence, given that Central Massachusetts serves as headquarters for Staples and The TJX Cos., two Fortune 500 firms. CVS, whose stores have a ubiquitous presence in the region, also made the top 10.

• Education is still a big part of the region's economic fabric. The University of Massachusetts Medical School ranked third again this year. Meanwhile, the two community colleges in the region — Quinsigamond and Mount Wachusett — added to their payrolls, as did the College of the Holy Cross and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
