United Way Awards $2.9M To 35 Agencies

United Way of Central Massachusetts has awarded nearly $2.9 million to Greater Worcester agencies that operate 50 programs, including those in education, health and family stability, the Worcester-based nonprofit organization announced.

The money from its most recent grant cycle will go to 35 agencies, which include: the American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central MA/Metrowest, Catholic Charities, Central Massachusetts Housing Alliance, Children's Friend, Community Healthlink, Community Legal Aid, Dismas House of Massachusetts, Elder Services of Worcester Area, Elm Park Center for Early Childhood Education, Family Health Center of Worcester, Family Services of Central Massachusetts, Friendly House, Girls Inc., Guild of St. Agnes, Jewish Family Service of Worcester, Latino Education Institute, Lutheran Social Services of New England, Massachusetts Education & Career Opportunities, Nativity School, Pernet Family Health Service, Rainbow Child Development Center, Regional Environmental Council, South Middlesex Opportunity Council, The CASA Project, The Bridge of Central Massachusetts, UMass Memorial HealthCare, Valley Residents for Improvement, Webster Square Day Care Center, Worcester Community Action Council, Worcester Educational Development Foundation, Worcester Roots Project, Worcester Youth Center, Youth Opportunities Upheld (YOU Inc.), and the YWCA of Central Massachusetts.

In all, United Way of Central Massachusetts will invest more than $5.7 million in the community this year, through these and other programs. Joseph Freitas, chair of the Community Impact Committee and vice president of finance at The Hanover Insurance Group, commented on the process and outcome of this year’s decisions, saying: “The community impact committee and the board have a responsibility to invest the donations of all of our contributors wisely, and we believe this slate of programs does exactly that.”
