What a difference a year makes! Twelve months ago, the Massachusetts unemployment rate was much lower than the national rate – 6.8 percent to 8.1 percent. But while the U.S. rate has fallen steadily to 7.4 percent, the Bay State's has crept back up, to 7.2 percent. Last week, the Patrick administration announced that the commonwealth gained only 300 new jobs in July. One reason, according to Associated Industries of Massachusetts (AIM), is an economic slowdown in Europe. But AIM said the European economy is beginning to expand again.
