Worcester startup Skyscope acquired; to remain in the city

The team from Skyscope will continue to operate out of Worcester following being acquired by Matter Communication.

Skyscope, a Worcester startup focused on video production, was acquired by a Newburyport public relations firm Tuesday and will remain operating in the city with all its employees.

Skyscope, with offices in downtown Worcester and Cambridge, was founded in 2012 by three Clark University graduates who met in college. The three young entrepreneurs decided to build their business in Worcester because of the resources and affordability of the location.

The company focuses on business-to-business videos promoting businesses. It was acquired for an undisclosed amount by Newburyport public relations firm Matter Communications. Matter will retain all 10 Skyscope employees at the Worcester location, said Matter Founder and CEO Scott Signore, in an interview with Worcester Business Journal on Tuesday morning.

“We’re going to be keeping all of the employees,” Signore said. “They are a polished group of young professionals doing excellent work… We don’t have plans to do anything other than help these guys do more of the dynamite business they are doing.”

The acquisition doubles the video capabilities of Matter’s own video-and-creative services group -- dubbed Studio C, according to the company. That group serves both business-to-business and consumer brands nationwide, but offers different services than Skyscope. Both companies are complemented by the other’s offerings, said Signore.

“Ultimately, this partnership is a force multiplier that will let us both deliver on our brand promise in an even bolder and more exciting way,” Skyscope CEO Sam Shepler said in a release from Matter.

Matter Communications was founded in 2003 and is headquartered north of Boston in Newburyport and has offices in Providence, R.I., Portland, Ore., Boulder, Colo. and Boston.
