Purgatory brewery to open in Northbridge next month

Purgatory Beer Co. is planning to open a 2,400-square-foot brewery and taproom in the Linwood Mill in Northbridge sometime next month, said co-founder Brian Distefano.

“We’re in the very last stages of getting set up,” he said Monday.

Town inspectors were at the spot Monday, the final roadblock before actual brewing can begin.

“As soon as the equipment gets hooked up, we can start making beer,” Distefano said

The brewery’s name comes from Sutton’s Purgatory Chasm, a Blackstone Valley staple of hiking and rock climbing. The name, coupled with the location in a renovated mill, should help appeal to area residents, Distefano said.

“It fits in with the mill nicely,” he said.

Distefano and business partner Kevin Muvehill, both from Sutton, met through their young daughters about seven years ago and started brewing at in their homes with a home brewing kit.

Over time, the pair developed better recipes and the hobby quickly became a potential business.

“The beer got to a point where even our buddies - who don’t pull any punches, said, “You guys could really sell this,’” Distefano recalled.

Those beers include mostly ales, IPAs, stouts and porters.

For the last few years, the pair have been picking the minds of other local brewers and learning how to start their own business.

Once open, the two will still work their full-time day jobs for the time being, Distefano in marketing and Muvehill in finance.
