Sikh temple opens in Westborough

Vantage Builders Inc. completed construction of a Sikh temple on Flanders Road in Westborough earlier this month.
A 28,000-square-foot Sikh temple has opened in Westborough with more than 50 rooms, including eight classrooms and four meeting rooms.
The building, called Gurdwara Sahib, was built to be the principal place of worship for the New England Sikh community, according to an announcement Thursday on the opening.
The temple was built on a 37-acres site at 168 Flanders Road, a site not far from where Flanders Road runs underneath I-495 just north of the Massachusetts Turnpike. Its architectural centerpiece, a golden dome, was built and shipped from India, according to Vantage Builders of Waltham, which built the $6 million structure.
The temple's meeting rooms can accommodate up to 480 people and the largest, the prayer room, has radiant heat for comfortable barefoot walking, Vantage Builders said. The building also has a library, dining area, residences of the community leader, and a commercial kitchen for meals for up to 300 people.
The New England Sikh Study Circle, which governs the Gurdwara Sahib, moved from a facility in Milford.
There are about 700,000 Sikhs in the United States and about 25 million worldwide, according to the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund.
