Esports coaching offered at Becker

Competitive gamers at Becker College will have access to esports coaches

An esports coaching platform and Becker College have entered into a partnership to provide access to professional coaches to the college’s esports club members.

As part of the new relationship, the college will hold practice twice a week with coaches from Boston firm Gamer Sensei. The club will be competing in tournaments this semester, according to a press release Tuesday.

Gamers can be coached individually or as a team, according to the release.

The Gamer Sensei platform offers coaching in 11 competitive games, but the partnership with Becker College will focus on two team-oriented games: League of Legends and Overwatch.

Tim Loew, executive director of the Massachusetts Digital Games Institute, said students showed immediate interest in Gamer Sensei’s program.

“This year the college is taking it to the next level, both in formalizing student involvement and management of the club, by implementing the coaching partnership with Gamer Sensei,” said Leow, who leads the Becker-based institute. “The vision is for the club to grow into a varsity sports program at Becker.”

The announcement comes just days after the college was awarded a $35,000 state grant toward the development of the institutes New Ventures Center.

Scheduled to open early 2018, the center will serve as an on-campus business assistance center for interactive media, game development and business technology from Becker and other colleges.
