Framingham retailer TJX is continuing to pay its employees in the company's 29 Puerto Rico stores after the island was devastated by Hurricane Maria. Much of the island remains without power and its unclear how many of the company's stores on the island are closed, but the company says "It is the right thing for us to do under these circumstances," even though many of the employees aren't working.
Would you keep paying your employees in a desperate situation, even if they weren't actively working?

I'm sure unemployment is available in Puerto Rico

We run a restaurant and so margins are slimmer and getting slimmer. Just can't afford to pay when no money is coming in the door.

You would think my employees owned the company the way they put their heart and soul into this firm. I would take care of them if they were in a desperate situation.

Yes, I would and I have in the past. However, it does depend on the financial status of the company. Fortunately, at the time I was in this situation, I was able to support my employee in his time of need.

We do not have extra to cover such a situation and our owner does not take a paycheck, so there is no extra to spare for time spent not working.

Specific situation and if I could afford it, but not by specific employee.

I am not sure what my company would do in this situation. I think they would try to help employees as much as possible. TJX is doing a great thing, paying their employees. I applaud them.

We have business interruption insurance that includes paying employee wages if the company is closed due to a natural disaster, power loss, or fire.

I would hope we would take care of our people with full pay and benefits if they were in a catastrophic situation but at the very least continue their benefits.
