Milford seeks developers for vacant 99-year-old school

Zachary Comeau Middle School East in Milford has been vacant for nearly two years.

A 70,000-square-foot vacant school building last assessed for $3.6 million is now on the market as Milford looks to return the structure to its commercial tax base and solicit a firm to redevelop the property.

Middle School East, built the heart of downtown Milford on Main Street in 1918, has been vacant for nearly two years after grades were reshuffled when a new $60-million elementary school was built.

The nearly 100-year-old school housed only 8th grade students.

A report from consulting firm The Cecil Group found the space would be best suited for commercial office space, a specialized medical office space or facility, apartments, senior housing or assisted living and a fitness center.

The facility could support municipal, recreational, training and educational uses, the report said.

No purchase price was included in a request for proposals document that was issued earlier this month, but the town is asking for a proposal to maximize the increase to the town’s property tax base.

The building was last assessed this year for $3.6 million.

Bids are due by Jan. 25.
