Consigli, Framingham firm to pay $275K in asbestos settlement

Milford’s Consigli Construction and a Framingham environmental consulting firm are among the four companies paying up to $300,000 in penalties after a contracted asbestos abatement company allegedly mishandled asbestos-containing materials while renovating the Greater Lowell Technical High School.

The settlements agreed to in Suffolk Superior Court on Thursday settle allegations from Attorney General Maura Healey’s office claiming Lawrence asbestos abatement company R.M. Technologies’ workers left pieces of asbestos pegboard, dust and debris in the school while on the job in 2014 and 2015.

Consigli Construction and Framingham-based Universal Environmental Consultants had oversight of R.M. Technologies, but couldn’t prevent the violations, the AG’s office said. The company is alleged to have used alternative abatement methods without Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection approval, and work was done on several occasions without supervision, the AG’s office said.

According to the final judgement filed in Suffolk Superior Court, Consigli will pay $195,000, Universal Environmental Consultants will pay $80,000 and Waltham-based Hub Testing Laboratory - a company hired to monitor the work - will pay $25,000.
