Milford pot grower hopes to tap into recreational market

A medical marijuana company with a 25,000-square-foot cultivation facility in Milford is hoping to expand into the recreational cannabis growing business.

Sira Naturals, which produces its products in Milford and operates medical dispensaries in Somerville, Cambridge and Needham, is holding a community meeting at Town Hall on Thursday to get input from the Milford community.

In the notice, which was filed last week by Sira Naturals' President and CEO Michael Dundas, said it intends to apply for at least one adult-use license as a cultivator, manufacturer or research facility.

Not included in the company’s plans for Milford is a recreational facility, as the town has voted to ban such establishments.

The town has taken several votes on recreational marijuana over the last year, including a complete ban on all recreational businesses in September, which prohibited Sira and testing lab ProVerde Laboratories from expanding into the new business.

Last week, however, residents took another vote, allowing Sira and ProVerde to tap into the new market once they’re allowed to do so later this year.

Sira, formerly Sage Cannabis, has been growing medical marijuana in Milford since August 2016.
