Harvard Pilgrim CEO resigns suddenly

Eric Schultz.

Eric Schultz, CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, resigned suddenly on Tuesday, apologizing for unspecified "mistakes."

"Regrettably, I recently exhibited behavior that was inconsistent with my personal core values and the company's core values and code of conduct," Schultz said in a letter to the insurer's board and employees. "During the past eight years as your leader, I was committed to fostering a workplace culture that was inclusive, welcoming and rooted in integrity and respect. I made mistakes, and I'm truly sorry."

Harvard Pilgrim named Michael Carson as president and the company said that later in June the board plans to name one of its members "to help facilitate key external relations during a period of transition."

The former chief operating officer at ConcertoHealth, a multi-state medical group, Carson joined Harvard Pilgrim last year as chief business growth officer. Carson has also worked as president of Anthem's Eastern Region Medicare business.
