Lakeway Commons, a Shrewsbury retail development anchored by a Whole Foods, includes residential units, something new shopping centers outside of city centers didn't have until recently. Two other area shopping centers under construction, Meadow Walk in Sudbury and Maynard Crossing in Maynard, also feature housing, and Shoppers World in Framingham has proposed housing as well.
Would you live in a development anchored by a big box store?

Mixed use is the best way of creating sustainable urban areas. But this big-box anchored developments should be careful integrating with the surrounding urban layout, so that they do not provide excessive amounts of parking and hinder walkability and urban life.

I like what they did in Northboro where Wegman's and BJ's are located. The multi-residential apartments are on the way into, but not right in, the retail area. Tastefully done.

I like residential living with amenities that are fairly close, however not part of the neighborhood.
