Housing costs have increased slightly, but income has increased significantly.

Mostly because my mortgage is paid off but real estate tax and utilities are still very high

I'm not sure exactly when we paid off our mortgage, but suspect that we might still have been making mortgage payments a decade ago. Given that, my answer probably isn't statistically useful.

It's not simply the high prices; it's also the high taxes.

They tell you that a mortgage is cheaper than a rent, but they never tell you about property taxes and how they go up year after year as communities struggle to generate revenue.
