Good Chemistry seeks city board approval for recreational sales

It’s another first for Good Chemistry: the Harrison Street dispensary is Worcester’s first marijuana company to apply for a special permit to sell adult-use cannabis products.

The dispensary was the first in the city to open for medical marijuana patients earlier this month.

The Planning Board is expected to consider the Colorado-based company’s application on Wednesday.

Good Chemistry CEO Matthew Huron told WBJ earlier this month the company does intend to tap into the state’s recreational industry approved by voters in November 2016, but the location likely wouldn’t offer products to non-medical customers until later this year.

The company has secured a host community agreement with the city, another required piece of the puzzle for adult-use cannabis companies in the state. It has submitted applications to the Cannabis Control Commission for retail sales at the location as well as cultivation and product manufacturing at its Bellingham facility.

The state’s rollout of the industry has been slow, but it could pick up quickly now that two independent testing laboratories were approved by the CCC last week, clearing a major hurdle in the industry’s required supply chain.

As of Aug. 23, Good Chemistry is the only Worcester company to apply for an adult-use license with the state, but other companies have indicated intentions to open 20 adult-use cannabis stores in the city. However, only 15 can be licensed, per city and state regulations related to the number of licensed liquor stores in a given municipality.
