The Massachusetts Department of Transportation on Wednesday is holding a public workshop on a planned reconstruction of Kelley Square in Worcester.

The meeting, held at the White Room at Crompton Collective in the Canal District, is the first of its kind on the state’s project to renovate the notorious intersection. The project will coincide with the $240-million Worcester Red Sox ballpark project just steps from Kelley Square in the Canal District.

The Kelley Square project was first announced simultaneous to the Pawtucket Red Sox’ move to Worcester on Aug. 17.

According to MassDOT, the project will address the safety and operational deficiencies for all users of the intersection, including motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians and nearby businesses.

The intersection, completely devoid of any meaningful traffic signals, is known for its chaotic traffic pattern. According to MassDOT, there were 403 reported crashes between January 2013 and December 2016, including one fatality.

The department is still gathering information on crash data and volume projections before a plan is developed.
