Briarwood, a Worcester retirement community, will expand thanks to a nearly $18-million tax exempt bond.

The facility will add 24 independent living units and 12 residential units for memory care patients, according to MassDevelopment, the state's finance and development agency issuing the bond. Those new units will join 169 independent living apartments and cottages, 24 assisted-living apartments and an 82-bed skilled nursing center.

Briarwood's 52-acre facility is located at 65 Briarwood Circle off Mountain Street East at the Boylston line.

Briarwood says it was founded in 1984 by two Worcester churches, Salem Covenant and First Baptist. It added a nursing home and additional units in 1993.
