German biomanufacturer acquires Shire's Milford site

Rentschler Biopharma SE, a contract development and manufacturing company for biopharmaceuticals, said Thursday has completed the purchase of the former Shire drug manufacturing facility in Milford.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and a land transaction for the property was not recorded in the Worcester County Registry of Deeds as of Thursday.

Rentschler Biopharma said it will continue to manufacturer for Ireland drugmaker Shire at the facility.

The company plans to grow the development and manufacturing site as a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) for complex biopharmaceuticals.

The 70 employees working at the site for Shire will all be offered jobs, Rentschler Biopharma said.

The site is the company’s first outside of Germany.

The 93,000-square-foot biomanufacturing facility on Maple Street was acquired in 2016 by Shire as part of its merger with Baxalta.

The facility sale by Shire comes just after Japan’s Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. announced its $59-billion acquisition of the company.
