Worcester's first recreational marijuana store wins final state approval

Photo/Grant Welker Good Chemistry on Harrison Street has been open since Aug. 2 for medical sales. It's now closer to opening for recreational sales in what would be a first for Worcester.

Worcester's first recreational marijuana store is one step closer to opening after Good Chemistry won state approval Thursday for a shop in the Canal District.

Good Chemistry, which is based in Colorado, said it hopes to begin selling adult-use cannabis products as soon as possible at 6 Harrison St. It has previously said it hopes to open in March.

“We are thrilled with the Cannabis Control Commission’s decision to approve Good Chemistry’s application for an adult use cannabis license in Worcester," Matthew Huron, Good Chemistry's CEO, said in a statement.

Good Chemistry, which uses a production facility in Bellingham, already sells marijuana for medicinal sales. It is now in line to become the first of what could be more than a dozen or more recreational pot shops in Worcester.

The store is one of 13 retail cannabis stores the city has selected to go through the state and local process of signing a host community agreement as the first step in a long permitting process. City officials have said it will permit up to 15 cannabis retailers to open.

Just last week, Worcester officials said they will begin negotiations for a host community agreement with four more retail cannabis stores: Cultivate Holdings at 1023 Southbridge St., New Dia at 118 Cambridge St., Munro Associates at 342 West Boylston St. and Sun Mass II at 56 Millbrook St. Cultivate opened one of the state's first pot shops last November in Leicester.

Host community agreements are needed before the state's Cannabis Control Commission will consider final approval.

In the meantime, the city's medicinal marijuana industry is also expanding. The Botanist opened in December at 65 Pullman St.
