Cumberland Farms will open a new store March 21 at 55 E. Main St. in Westborough to compete with fast-casual dining. The store will have 5,275 square feet, in-store dining and outdoor patio seating, and an expanded menu including ciabatta sandwiches, smoothies and espresso.
Can convenience stores compete as dining options against fast casual giants like Chipotle and Panera Bread?

What's the difference between these and places you normally stop at when you're traveling on an interstate? Nothing as long as the location delivers consistant product.

Cumberland Farms and Pride are working hard to provide fast, quality options, but we're still a long way from the experience provided by Wawa and Sheetz in other parts of the country.

Don't know about Chipotle or Panera, but Wawa's has been doing fast-casual deli food for years. It's all about whether you can convince people to trust the food you're making. I will say though that gas-stations have a big hill to climb on this one.
