Two Central Mass. firms announce 234 layoffs

Two Central Massachusetts companies have alerted the state they plan to lay off a total of 234 workers.

Parsec Inc., which has workers at the CSX rail yard off Grafton Street in Worcester, said it will eliminate 53 jobs effective May 23. Parsec, which is based in Cincinnati, is a contract terminal management services provider.

A message left with the Worcester facility Friday afternoon was not immediately returned.

In Clinton, the cereal and snack maker Weetabix said it plans to eliminate 181 jobs effective in June or July. Post Holdings, which acquired Weetabix in 2017, first announced plans to close the Clinton facility in February 2018. That announcement said the closure was due to take place in August 2019.

Weetabix didn't immediately return a call seeking comment, but St. Louis-based Post portrayed the decision last year as a cost-efficiency decision.

"The planned closure of the facility reflects Post’s continuous improvement initiative to optimize its cereal production network and manage costs in the ready-to-eat cereal category," the company said.
