Genzyme Corp. is set to begin construction on a Northborough facility that will consolidate some of the company's Framingham and Allston operations.
The Cambridge-based pharmaceutical and biotech firm said it plans to spend about $68 million to renovate an existing 210,000-square-foot facility at 11 Forbes Rd. When complete, the facility will house the company's warehouse and distribution operations, its quality control group, its finished goods, labeling and packaging group and its clinical pharmacy research group.
About 165 of Genzyme's current employees will work in the complex upon completion and the company said it expects to hire an additional 30 to 50 new employees for the facility, as well.
Between 150 and 200 construction workers will be needed for the renovation, which will be completed in "a little over a year," the company said.
Genzyme is holding a kickoff event at the facility today from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
