Smartphone Demand Rises
The number of mobile phones shipped grew 1 percent, year-over-year, in the second quarter, while the number of smartphones shipped increased 42 percent in the same period, according to Framingham-based International Data Corporation (IDC).
Quarterly data was collected by the market intelligence firm's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, IDC said. The tracker found that vendors shipped 406 million units in the second quarter of 2012, compared to 401.8 million units in the same quarter last year. And the number of smartphones shipped grew to 153.9 million in the second quarter of 2012, compared to 108.3 million a year ago.
Competing smartphone vendors are falling deeper behind Samsung and Apple, which have more than doubled their combined market share over the last two years, according to the statement.
"Samsung and Apple have quickly become the global smartphone heavyweights, though both employ somewhat different approaches to the market," said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst at IDC.
