City In Talks For CitySquare Hotel, Apartments

A four-star hotel could be in the future of Worcester's CitySquare development, along with up to 350 luxury apartments, City Manager Michael V. O'Brien said Monday.
O'Brien, speaking before a gathering of about 75 at an open house at the new downtown location of World Energy Solutions, said officials are in the "discussion stages" with a developer from outside Worcester. He called the discussions "very preliminary but promising." He did not reveal the name of the developer.
O'Brien said the addition of a hotel and luxury apartments, located near the new transit center of Union Station and the future hub of the Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA), would bring CitySquare closer to fulfilling the goals of a "smart growth" strategy, which entails a mix of uses within a defined area. That includes housing opportunities and easier access to mass transit.
Aside from the new WRTA hub, construction continues in CitySquare at the site of the future Saint Vincent Hospital Cancer Center. Next door, work on the new Unum building is nearly complete. Earlier this year, officials expected Unum to move into the building this fall; the cancer center is expected to be ready in the spring of 2013.
In addition, officials aim to fill up to 100,000 square feet of retail space on what will be the new Mercantile Street, which will run from Front Street to Foster Street, spilling out across that road from the DCU Center.
