2012 40 Under Forty: Bryan Trainor

Trainor

VICE PRESIDENT OF MARKETING, Bulbs.com

Company location: Worcester

Residence: Brooklyn, Conn.

Favorite movie: "Dr. Strangelove"

Career highlights:
At Citizens Bank, I received the President's Award for leadership and writing as part of the Mellon Retail Bank Merger Communications Team. Within six months of the Bulbs.com brand and website relaunch, we saw an 18-percent increase in sales, a 20-percent increase in conversion rate and a 7-point increase in customer satisfaction.

Community involvement: My children attend a small, private Catholic school that, to be successful, requires a lot of involvement from the parents. Whether working in the fish-and-chip booth during Lent as part of the Knights of Columbus or teaching confirmation classes, I try to help out wherever possible. Last fall, my wife and I helped raise $10,000 for the Do Good Bus, a charitable organization that stopped in dozens of cities nationally to rally local citizens to “do good” in the community.

Biggest success: The corporate rebranding and website redesign we completed was wildly successful. We are continuing to build on that momentum.

Biggest challenge: While working at The Hartford, we needed to figure out how to leverage a conservative, 200-year-old brand to create motivating, memorable direct-response advertising to compete in the direct-to-consumer auto insurance market. We created an integrated, multi-market pilot program that drove sales.

Mentors: Pete Cashmore, founder and CEO, Mashable. He has been able to build a brand from his profitable website and company that is both fun yet extremely trustworthy. It has become my go-to site for information and a model for how to build a professional, entrepreneurial corporate culture.

Hidden talent: I make a mean French onion soup and have acted in several local productions in Connecticut. I also recently completed the New England Tough Mudder, a 10+ mile British Special Forces-inspired obstacle course.
