2012 40 Under Forty: Nicholas Maruca

Maruca

PARTNER, Creative Cabinets & Creative Living

Company location: Worcester

Residence: Shrewsbury

Favorite movie: "Forrest Gump"

Career highlights: My first is winning Best in Design (New England) for a kitchen our firm designed, renovated and installed in Southborough. Helping to bring Creative Cabinets from a small mom-and-pop store when I started in 1996 to one of New England's premiere kitchen and bath design and remodeling firms definitely ranks right up on top of my career highlights. My last highlight was taking a risky step in setting up another business to complement Creative Cabinets. Our clients were looking for us to provide them with design, remodeling and project management services. In 2006 I started Creative Living, a full-service interior and exterior design/build firm. It worked out to be the best decision I made.

Community involvement: I have been involved with Shrewsbury youth sports since the day my oldest child could swing a bat or kick a ball. Whether it be soccer, tackle football, flag football, baseball, lacrosse or basketball, I enjoy being involved with my kids' activities and helping out the organizations. I have also been a member of the Shrewsbury Street Merchants Association.

Biggest success: My biggest success by far was celebrating my 15th wedding anniversary with my wife, Megan.

Biggest challenge: Being self-employed brings all types of challenges. Many people depend on you, trust you and believe in you.

Mentors: My biggest mentor of all is my mom. She has always been able to keep me on track and going down the right path in life. If she did not approve or thought that a decision I was making was not the right one she would tell me straight out.

Hidden talent: Cooking. I have to say that I am very good at it. I am not the type of cook that goes out to the fancy grocery store and buys all these expensive ingredients to cook with. I like to cook more like my grandmother used to: more old-style type of cooking.
