2012 40 Under Forty: James R. Goodhue

Goodhue

ASSISTANT VP BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT/BRANCH MANAGER, Commerce Bank

Branch location: Leominster

Residence: Worcester

Favorite movie: "Glengarry Glen Ross"

Career highlights: Over the past 10 years, I have worked for some of the largest and most successful companies in the Northeast. None have compared to Commerce Bank, with which I have spent the last five years of my professional life. With Commerce I have had the opportunity to give so much back to the community, in addition to my work helping small and mid-size businesses.

Community involvement: A few of the events I participate in is the Kids Safety Day, as well as Winter and Summer Strolls of Leominster. The event that is closest to my heart, however, is the Commerce Bank Children's Safety Event that we have run and hosted in our North Leominster branch for the past four years.

Biggest success: My largest success is building the network of people I work with every day. This network led to an amazing referral group that I founded in the North Central Area called NCN, or North Central Networking. We take the time to meet one on one to really learn and build lasting relationships.

Biggest challenge: The largest challenge for everyone in the industry over the last few years is the changing environment of banking … to more of a customer service role. That, as well as the change in the economic environment, has really been a challenge to change and adapt to new roles that are still evolving.

Mentors: Over the past five years, I have had the privilege to work directly for Commerce Bank's senior vice president of retail, JoAnn Morency. She has guided and helped me to grow as a manager, banker and especially a person. Her example of caring and interaction … has been a real inspiration for me.

Hidden talent: One thing many people don't know about me is that I shot at state and national small bore rifle competitions, and on the New Hampshire State High Power Team.
