CSX Launches N.E.'s First Double-Stack Route

CSX Transportation, which is expanding its intermodal terminal in Worcester, said it has opened New England's first double-stack cleared intermodal route.

The rail operator said the route is on its rail line between Worcester and the New York border.

CSX has been working with the state to raise rail bridges along key routes so it can send more cargo and reduce transit times by as much as 24 hours.

To enable the double-stack route, 31 bridges were raised to 21 feet – high enough for two stacked intermodal containers to pass under them.

The route connects with another double-stack cleared route in upstate New York, which CSX said allows it to link Worcester with double-stack routes throughout the country.

Previously, double-stack trains headed to and from New England had to stop in Syracuse, N.Y., to be unstacked and stacked. Those Syracuse stops added time, cost and complexity, CSX said.

The double-stack routes are part of a larger agreement between CSX and the state that is aimed at providing more frequent commuter service between Worcester and Boston.

Under the agreement finalized in October, the state paid CSX $100 million for 45 miles of Framingham/Worcester commuter line between Boston and Worcester, as well as sections of other lines outside Central Massachusetts.

Three new inbound and outbound trains have already been added on that route, with plans for one more inbound and outbound special express this spring.
