‘T’ Adding 2 Trains To Worcester Line

The MBTA will add two express trains on the Worcester-to-Boston commuter rail line – one in each direction – weekdays starting April 29, according to Massachusetts Bay Commuter Rail (MBCR), which operates the commuter rail lines for the “T.”

The new trains include:

  • Train P582, which will depart Worcester at 6:20 a.m., make one stop in Framingham at 7, then continues to Back Bay and arrive at South Station at 7:43; and
  • Train P583, which will depart South Station at 5:35 p.m., make stops at Back Bay (5:41) and Framingham (6:13) and arrive in Worcester at 6:43.

MBCR also announced these two additional changes to the outbound schedule on the Worcester-Framingham line:

  • Train P507: South Station departure time will change from 7:38 a.m. to 7:45 a.m.; and
  • Train P527: South Station departure time will change from 5:35 p.m. to 5:40 p.m.

There will be no changes to the current weekend service, MBCR said.

The expansion of service on the line is part of an agreement between the state and CSX Corp., which agreed to move its rail freight operations out of Allston and west to Westborough and Worcester. That move took effect within the past several months. State officials said the deal would allow the ‘T’ to gradually expand service on the Worcester-Framingham line by increasing the number of round-trip weekday trains between Worcester’s Union Station and Boston from 12 to 20. Three were added last October; the rest are scheduled to be added later this year.

Pocket schedules will be available at South Station by Wednesday, MBCR said.
