Framingham-based office retailer Staples Inc. is hoping  3-D printers will catch on in the consumer and small business market.

Staples announced today that it is selling The Cube 3D Printer, which is made by South Carolina-based 3D Systems Corp. The units are priced at $1,299 and are available online and will be sold in select Staples retail stores by the end of June.

Staples said the move makes it the first major retailer in the United States to sell 3-D printers, which can create fully formed objects using several different types of plastics, which are biodegradable and recyclable.

Chuck Hull, who founded 3D Systems, patented the first 3-D printer in 1986, according to the company’s website, which offers a video of The Cube 3D Printer’s capabilities.

According to Gartner Research, 3-D printing is an established technology among automotive manufacturers, the military and medical industries, where they are used to design prototypes and architectural models.
