Iron Mountain Breaks Ground on Northborough Data Center

Iron Mountain has broken ground on a 30,000-square-foot, LEED Gold certified data center in Northborough, the Boston-based information management company announced today.

The data center will be fully operational within six months, the company said, and will be located at 171 Bearfoot Rd. next to the company’s records storage facilities.

The project will create 100 construction jobs and the equivalent of 10 permanent full-time jobs once it’s done. The data center is eventually expected to employ the equivalent of 20 full-time workers, the company said.

Iron Mountain wouldn’t disclose the construction cost of the data center.

The data halls will receive Tier III design and construction certification from the Uptime Institute, the second-highest standard set for data centers.

“Home to many highly-regulated organizations, the greater Boston area is underserved in terms of access to area data centers capable of meeting their unique needs,” said Mark Kidd, Iron Mountain’s senior vice president and general manager of data centers. “With security and compliance at the core of Iron Mountain’s operations, those highly-regulated industries like healthcare, biotech and financial services can now choose a better-suited option for their data center operations.”

Each of the three data halls will provide 10,000 square feet of space and support 1.2 megawatts of information, the company said. A redundant fiber network means no single disruption should cause the network to fail, according to the company.

The facility will be able to withstand winds of up to 149 miles per hour and a 1.5 seismic rating in the event of an earthquake.
