Athol Area, North Central United Way Groups To Merge
The Athol Area United Way will become part of the United Way of North Central Massachusetts, bringing together two key charitable-giving organizations that serve the northern swath of Central Massachusetts.
Janet Mann, board president for the Athol organization, said the board approved of the merger “after careful consideration,” according to a statement from Athol Area United Way.
Mann said in the statement that the merger will benefit the greater Athol region because United Way of North Central Massachusetts has staff and resources that can revitalize annual fundraising efforts.
“They have been terrific to work with, providing campaign assistance to our United Way for the past two campaign cycles,” Mann said. “While we have an incredible group of volunteers who have done a remarkable job, we also need professional staff to help take the organization to the next level.”
Three board members from the Athol Area United Way will join the North Central Massachusetts board, according to the statement.
It’s expected that the merger will be completed by the end of the month, the statement added.
The United Way of Athol Area was founded in 1983 and serves Athol, Petersham, Phillipston and Royalston. The United Way of North Central Massachusetts serves Ashburnham, Ashby, Ayer, Baldwinville, Barre, Devens, Fitchburg, Gardner, Groton, Harvard, Hubbardston, Leominster, Littleton, Lunenburg, Pepperell, Shirley, Templeton, Townsend, Westminster and Winchendon.
