Work And Workers: As Not Seen On TV

For many Americans, their place of employment is more than just a building where they spend eight or so hours a day, leave, then repeat day after day, all part of the seemingly never-ending quest to pick up a paycheck, pay the bills and maybe invest a little.

It's more than that, and the dynamic that is the modern workplace has become part of American culture. Just look at television shows of the present and past that focus on the inner workings of the office and the interpersonal relationships among the people inside them. The plots have run the panoply of workplace-induced emotions, from misery to elation.

What you don't see a lot of is what employers do for their employees, aside from, of course, giving them a job and a paycheck. After all, benefits, wellness programs and professional development seminars don't make for great TV.

But those things count today, especially as the economy begins to rebound and employers need to pay closer attention to keeping valued employees who might otherwise look for something better, even if it means a tradeoff of less pay for better benefits or better opportunities to advance their careers to the next level.

It's in that spirit that we honor a group of companies in Central Massachusetts for workplace practices that help boost their employees — from helping them improve their health to giving them the tools to better themselves. Out of more than 20 that shared their practices with us through an online survey conducted in August and September, here are the five we picked as having noteworthy workplace practices worth writing about:

General Excellence - Hanover Insurance Group

Employee Health & Wellness - Chitika

Innovative Benefit Programs - Training Associates
