Caterer Buys Devens Theater Building
A local caterer has bought the former Hodges Theater in Devens and the three acres on which it’s situated, according to MassDevelopment, which sold the property for $120,000.
Steve Catalano, who operates the catering company Dolce Brands, plans to raze the three-story theater building and erect a state-of-the-art facility for his firm, MassDevelopment said. He also plans to rent space to other companies and support New England Studios, the film and television production facility in Devens, according to MassDevelopment, which has been managing Devens since the mid-1990s, when most operations at Fort Devens ceased as part of defense cutbacks.
The theater building was built in 1976 and had served the military community.
Dolce Brands will focus on serving the growing Massachusetts film industry, and New England Studios has named the company its preferred caterer, MassDevelopment said. Dolce Brands has catered at movie sets throughout New England, including the HBO miniseries “Olive Kitteridge,” which was filmed at locations across the state, according to MassDevelopment.
Catalano also operates Dolce’s Wood Grille in Pepperell.
“We’re pleased to work with Steve – a committed member of the Devens business community – on the growth of his catering company,” MassDevelopment President and CEO Marty Jones said in a statement. “New England Studios and the Massachusetts film sector generate ancillary economic activity in industries like food service.”
“We are extremely excited about the opportunity New England Studios provides for our newest addition to the company profile,” Catalano said in the MassDevelopment statement. “Our company has already invested in mobile kitchens and a talented group of professionals who specialize in the movie catering business.”
Catalano said the close proximity of the theater property to New England Studios – less than a quarter-mile – and Devens’s central location were keys to the deal.
